I can't say it was a bad thing to actually hear David Duchovny's cadence in my head while I was reading this. I have to believe it. It's almost as if the author just wanted to finish it and stopped caring about turning a well-crafted phrase.
The language is captured very well, and although some characters are just blips on the radar they still show some pop when on the page. There are many factors working against it. That was all this book needed to be. It's a quick and fun read that creates a nice reference for the Californication universe for fans. This whole thing appears as a well written first attempt at a book.
Advertisement Decadent writer Hank Moody writes very, very rarely. The book starts reading more like something out of the mind of Hank Moody toward the last half, but the voice is still lacking. Last week I would have said definitely yes, yesterday I would have said no way, today I say maybe. I love Hank Moody but if he was a friend he would seriously piss me off. Despite the fact that I really love Californication espescially the first 2 seasons and it has nothing to do with the series it has no compelling or at least interesting story. Personality Psychological issues Hank is a self-loathing, alcoholic, but complex character with a lot of psychological issues. Duchovny plays writer and man-slut Hank Moody, who hit it big with this book - which was made into a mediocre romantic comedy. This is a short novel that can be read in a day or so. But I still say read it. It isn't at all about Hank Moody.
This novel wouldn't receive the same level of recognition in the real world as within the show, but it's not bad. If you feel trapped, insecure, and like everything is a struggle, then being like Hank Moody would be amazing. I didn't expect anything monumental, but I expected something more--something that would pop out and pull me in. Because for a coming of age book there isn't much learning or realization of what life and being grown up means after that shitty thing happened done by the character. And writing sure beats picking up trash for a living.
Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. He was nominated for the same award three more times; 2009, 2010, and 2012. Except for the current season. But then again, let's not forget how disappointed I was with the novel. Seriously - I can get references - although maybe not my last girlfriend, who for reasons that that are still unclear stabbed me with a knife.
